CfP special issue of Philosophia Scientiae on "Mathematical Exchanges", Deadline: 1 May 2014

CALL FOR PAPERS
Philosophia Scientiae invites contributions for the following special topic:

Mathematical exchanges: case studies (18th to 20th centuries)

Special thematic issue of Philosophia Scientiæ 19/2 (June, 2015)

Guest editors: Hélène Gispert, Philippe Nabonnand and Jeanne Peiffer

Deadline of submission: May 1st, 2014

Notification: October 1st, 2014

In mathematics, the study of the production process must take into account
the mechanisms of circulation, which are an integral part of it, as well
as the various kinds of circulation or exchange that take place. The
multiple exchanges between the (individual, collective or abstract) actors
involved in the process of production are thus an element essential to
analyse. In a first approach, we can distinguish three kinds of exchange
(even if these are often entangled): oral communication, which needs the
simultaneous presence of the protagonists, correspondences and circulation
of printed texts.

The volume will be dedicated to the study of the most important vectors of
circulation: newspapers, books, teaching, conferences, meetings,
academies, travels, personal encounters in institutions or outside?. Its
aim is to characterize the nature of these exchanges, starting from a
series of case studies taken in a long temporal perspective (from the
Enlightenment to the first half of the 20th century). These studies are
meant to put into light the dynamics underlying the building of
communities and mathematical disciplines, but also the breaks induced by
specialization, professionalization, the growing role of the market, etc.

Manuscripts must be submitted in English or in French, and prepared for an
anonymous refereeing process. A summary in French and a summary in English
(200-300 words) are to be included.

The length of the papers should not exceed 7250 words or 42000 signs
(spaces, summaries and footnotes included).

Contributions are to be sent to

General submissions within this range are welcome.
