300 years of Christian Wolff's 'German Logic': Sources, Significance and
Reception

University of Leuven, November 21-22, 2013

Organizers: Arnaud Pelletier, Karin de Boer, Eric Schliesser, Benoît Timmermans

Venue: Institute of Philosophy, Kardinaal Mercierplein 2, 3000 Leuven

Wolff?s so called ?German Logic?, published for the first time in Halle in
1713, was one of the most popular but also one of the most controversial
books in eighteenth century German philosophy: the book was edited forteen
times during Wolff?s career; it was the subject of dozens of publications
against or in defence of it; and it is the origin of the polemical
expression of a ?Leibniz-Wolffian philosophy?. In spite of all this, Wolff?s
first treatise on logic is hardly known nowadays. The conference ? which
will mark the 300th anniversary of the publication ? aims to bring together
international researchers in order to assess the historical and
philosophical significance of Wolff?s German Logic. The center of discussion
will be the main philosophical issue that triggered off the controversies in
the course of the eighteenth century, namely: What is the role of logic in
philosophy? What is a concept? What does is mean to analyze a concept? Such
questions will be addressed in view of the sources, meaning, and reception
of Wolff?s German Logic.
