PhD student position in philosophy of science and/or epistemology, Vienna (Austria), Deadline: 4 July 2013

This is a four-year full-time PhD studentship in Philosophy of Science 
and/or Epistemology at the University of Vienna starting October 1st 2013. 
There is also a teaching component of one two-hour (per week) seminar 
(usually in the area of the PhD).

Note that the successful applicant need not be able to speak German until 
three years into the job.

The deadline is July 4th, and shortlisted applicants will be interviewed 
in person or over Skype around mid-July. The interview will consist of a 
10 minute presentation by the applicant on their PhD project, and 20 
minutes of questions by the committee.

The advertised position is situated in the Department of Philosophy in the
Faculty of Philosophy and Education. The Department is large (by
international comparison) and its members have a considerable variety of
areas of competence. This motivates both the duty to offer a teaching
programme that spans the full breadth of the discipline, and the intention
to satisfy high standards of research performance. The Department attaches
great value to the core areas of philosophy, but it also has the aim to
contribute, on their basis, to the clarification and solution of current
problems. The intention to acknowledge new philosophical developments and
tasks is reflected in the number of co-operations and research fields of
the department.

Extent of Employment: 30 hours/week
Occupation group in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48
VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc)
On top of this relevant chargeable work experience determines the
assessment to a particular salary grade.

Areas of work:

The main task is to produce a publishable dissertation in the field of
philosophy of science and epistemology. A description of the dissertation
project must be part of the application papers.

Philosophy of science and epistemology at the University of Vienna
comprises the following main areas:

(a) general philosophy of science,
(b) epistemology,
(c) philosophies of specific sciences,
(d) ethics and politics of science,
(e) philosophy of the history and sociology of science,
(f) philosophy of technology, and
(g) other philosophical areas and themes that are important for
understanding science and technology.

Other tasks are: to participate in research, teaching and administration
at the Department of Philosophy in the research area of philosophy of
science and epistemology.

The University of Vienna, more precisely the Department of Philosophy,
offers an intensive supervision of the dissertation by professors of the
Department of Philosophy. Vienna is an attractive and dynamically

Profile:

To be successful, applicants must fulfil the following conditions:

- an undergraduate degree in philosophy (diploma or masters degree, or a
comparable degree)
- excellent marks
- ability to work as a member of a team
- the willingness to acquire, within three years from the point of
appointment, a command of the German language that is sufficient to teach
at the Bachelor-level and to participate in university committees.

- a dissertation project outline of about 3,000 words
- the undergraduate dissertation (Bachelor or Master); or a chapter or
paper of at least 5,000 words, and
