The Ruhr-University of Bochum is one of the strong research universities 
in Germany. The Institute for Philosophy II at the Ruhr-University of 
Bochum invites applications for an

Assistant Professorship in Philosophy

at the chair for philosophy of mind (with additional research emphasis in 
philosophy of language and philosophy of cognition) (Prof. A. Newen). The 
position starts at September 1st, 2012 and lasts for three years, with a 
possible prolongation of another three years.

The assistant professorship is offered in the research unit of Prof. Dr. 
Albert Newen focusing on one area in theoretical philosophy that 
complements the ongoing research projects under his supervision. This 
position is open for developing a new research topic in systematic 
theoretical philosophy. The ideal candidate offers primarily a proposal 
that is complementary but has some connections to one of the main research 
topics:

Ongoing research projects include:

-Knowing-how and Knowing-that/**Natural foundation of cognitive abilities

-Theory of Mind/Understanding Other Minds

- Self-Consciousness and Self-Deception

-Social Information Processing and Culture

-Philosophy of Mind and Language: Concepts, Reductionism, Agency and 
Ownership, Ontology of the Mind

-Animal Minds and the anthropological borderline between humans and 
animals

- Philosophy of Neurosciences or Neuroethics

The common methodology of the projects is interdisciplinary, combining 
philosophical, linguistic, psychological and neurobiological approaches.

The projects are realized in cooperation with the universities in Köln, 
Bonn, Bielefeld, Lausanne, Tilburg, Bloomington, Stanford, Macquarie 
University at Sidney and other external partners. The postdoc should be 
open for cooperation with colleagues of different subjects and from 
different universities while the research project can have a clear 
complementary research dimension.

/Profile of the Postdoc position:/

Applicants should hold an outstanding Ph.D. in Philosophy and ideally, 
also a degree in Psychology, Cognitive Science, Linguistics, Psychiatry or 
Neuroscience. Substantial expertise in at least one of these areas is 
required. The selected person will participate in the supervision of 
research projects and work with doctoral students. There will remain a lot 
of freedom to develop one's own research project in systematic theoretic 
philosophy. Furthermore the position is open for a qualification called 
"Habilitation" in the German university system.

/Teaching/

The position is involving a teaching duty of two courses per semester. The 
courses can be delivered in English or German.

/Language/

The applicant need not speak German at the time of application, but should 
be willing to learn to teach in German.
