The Reading Philosophy Department is friendly, exciting, and growing
department, with several hundred students doing Philosophy Courses in
their first year, and approximately 90 second year and 60 third year
students reading Honours Philosophy. There is also a very lively and
successful Graduate programme, with around 30 students. The well-known
Leiter Report (see http://www.philosophicalgourmet.com/) on graduate
programmes in Philosophy rated the Department the equal fourth best in the
country, and comparable to US graduate schools at the University of
California at Irvine, the University of California at San Diego, the
University of Chicago, the University of Texas at Austin, and Yale. The
Department is part of the thriving Faculty of Arts and Humanities, which
has a strong interdisciplinary tradition and attracts large numbers of
undergraduate and graduate students from the U.K. and overseas. Within
thirty minutes easy reach of London and Oxford, the Department - part of
the School of Humanities (including Classics and History of Art) - is a
lively and productive centre of research with an international reputation
for excellence. The government?s Subject Review in 2000 gave the
Department a perfect score of 24 out of 24 for the quality of its
teaching. In 2001 the Research Assessment Exercise gave the Department a 5
for the quality of its research, recognising the international reputation
of the Department. Although, with thirteen full-time members of staff, the
department is now of above average size for a UK Philosophy Department, we
are also well known for our friendly and co-operative atmosphere, in which
students and staff get to know each other on an individual basis.

Academic Staff in the Department are Dr Elaine Beadle, Dr Emma Borg,
Professor John Cottingham, Professor Jonathan Dancy, Dr Alice Drewery, Dr
Simon Glendinning, Professor Hanjo Glock, Professor Brad Hooker, Professor
David Oderberg, Dr John Preston, Mr Michael Proudfoot, Dr Philip
Stratton-Lake, Professor Galen Strawson, Dr Mark Tebbit, Dr Joel Katzav,
Mr Andrew Williams. You can find further information about the Department
