Japan Prize fuer Benoit Mandelbrot

The Japan Prize 2003

Dr. Benoit B. Mandelbrot and Dr. James A. Yorke have been named the 2003
laureates of the Japan Prize in the category Science and Technology of
Complexity. The laureates were cited for having "found, respectively, that
fractals and chaos are the universal structures existing in complex
systems, and they elucidated their fundamental properties. They have
furnished us with new frameworks for understanding complex phenomena, and
they have contributed both by establishing fundementals and by providing
us with applications."

The Japan Prize is awarded to people from all parts of the world whose
original and outstanding achievements in science and technology are
recognized as having advanced the frontiers of knowledge and served the
cause of peace and prosperity for mankind. Fields of study for the prize
encompass all categories of science and technology, with two fields
designated for the prize each year in consideration of developments in
science and technology. Each Japan Prize laureate receives a certificate
of merit and a commemorative medal. A cash award of 50 million yen (about
US $421 thousand) is also presented for each prize category.
