PHLOXSHOP 2: Modality http://phloxshop2.wordpress.com/ Berlin; 9-11 September 2009 The research group phlox invites submissions for a workshop on modality with Dorothy Edgington and Keith Hossack as keynote speakers. The workshop will focus on counterfactual reasoning, modal knowledge, and modal idioms in natural language. Questions that may be addressed include, but are not limited to, the following: - What strength or kind of modality is expressed in different sorts of everyday modal idioms? - What role does metaphysical possibility play for non-philosophical reasoning? - Is knowledge of counterfactuals prior to knowledge of possibilities and necessities? - Can modal knowledge be grounded in knowledge of some non-modal facts? On the format of the workshop: a. Date and Place Phloxshop II will take place from the 9th to the 11th of September at the Humboldt-Universitt zu Berlin. b. Submissions Submissions should consist of longer abstracts of the paper to be presented, not exceeding 1.000 words. The abstract should outline the topic and the main arguments of the paper. The deadline for submissions is the 1st of May 2009. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by the 1st of July 2009. Please submit your abstract by email to justbecause@gmx.de. c. Presentations From the submissions, six papers will be selected for the workshop. The accepted papers will be made available to all participants in advance and it will be expected that they are read before the workshop. Accordingly, the presentation of each paper will be limited to very brief prcis so that there will be time for extended discussions. Moreover, a commentator for every paper will be arranged. d. Travel and accommodation We provide accommodation for authors and commentators; additionally, authors will receive a moderate travel grant (commentators will have to cover their own travel expenses). e. Commentators Applications to participate in the workshop as a commentator should include a CV of the applicant and should be made by the 1st of May 2009.
