ANNOUNCEMENT AND FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS

This is to announce the tenth edition of the workshop that takes
linguists, philosophers and logicians to the ski slopes. It will be held
March 12-16 2009, on the mountaintop Szrenica, Poland (the same
location as every year).

SUBMISSIONS

We invite authors to submit a one-page abstract to Nina Gierasimczuk
before January 15th, for a talk of between 30 minutes (including
discussion). The theme of this years workshop is *Learning* -- as
usual this 'hot topic' should not exclude submissions on other
subjects, but talks relating typical Szklarska Poreba concerns to
learning are especially welcome. We prefer new and original ideas,
even if the material is not fully ripe and the presentation still
tentative.

ESPECIALLY RELEVANT TOPICS

* Models of language acquisition
* Pragmatics and language acquisition
* Formal complexity of language learning
* Learning and formal semantics
* Learning in computational linguistics
* Logical analysis of learning process
* Strategies for learning, game-theoretical perspective

TRADITIONAL THEMES

* Fossilization theory
* Lexical pragmatics
* Experimental pragmatics
* The architecture of the syntax/semantics interface
* Diachronic aspects of syntax
* Quantum cognition
* Language and computation
* Grammaticalization studies
* Information structure and prosody
* Licensing of polarity elements, quantification, etc.
* The evolution of communication and language
* Language typology
* Evolutionary foundations of general pragmatic principles.

INVITED SPEAKERS

Paul Boersma
Wojciech Buszkowski
Damir & Malgorzata E. Cavar

REGISTRATION

You can register by sending an email to Nina Gierasimczuk
(nina.gierasimczuk@gmail.com).

-Early skiing request-
It may be possible to hire cross-country skis, however we need to know
in advance how many people would be interested and (crucially) how big
their feet are. If you are interested please let Nina know when you
register.

THE HERMANN LOTZE PRIZE

The International Szklarska Poreba Center for Experimental Philosophy
& Pragmasemantics will award its first Lotze Medal in 2009. The Medal
is given in honour of Rudolf Herman Lotze (see:
http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/hermann-lotze/). It is awarded
annually on occasion of the Szklaska Poreba conference on the
roots of pragmasemantics, to scientists who have made significant
contributions to experimental philosophy and pragmasemantics. The
internal consistency, coherence and significance of the nominee's
research programme is important, not the uniformity with current
mainstream paradigms.
