KNOWLEDGE, REPRESENTATION, AND LEARNING

Universittsclub Bonn, August 28-29 2008

http://www.wuk.uni-bonn.de

The workshop takes place within the 'Wissen und Knnen' ('knowing-how and

knowing-that') project, sponsored by the VolkswagenStiftung. The project se
eks
to enhance understanding of the cognitive abilities underlying knowledge
structures. On the basis of behavioral and neurological evidence it has bee
n
argued that, besides the well established distinction between propositional
 and
procedural knowledge, further kinds of knowledge have to be identified, e.g
.
imagination-based knowledge.

The special focus of the present workshop are the learning processes underl
ying
development of knowledge of a specific kind. The aim is to understand th
e
mental processes, and the conditions under which they are employed, that gu
ide
the acquisition of new knowledge and its later application. Interactions
between different kinds of knowledge and possible obstructions that might

result are put under investigation.

The perspective taken by the participants of the workshop is emphatically

interdisciplinary, including findings from philosophy, psychology, and
cognitive neuroscience.
