Theme:
Arguers and critics characteristically aim to realize several goals at th
e
same time. On the one hand, a discussant pretends to make contribution
s
that are reasonable (for instance, by furthering the resolution of th
e
underlying dispute). On the other hand, he also wants to be seen as makin
g
effective, i.e. persuasive, contributions. Depending on the situation, th
e
contribution is to be effective with respect to a favorable deal (in
a
negotiation), with respect to persuading the interlocutor of a certai
n
conclusion (in an argumentative discussion) or with respect to getting th
e
adversary to acknowledge the superiority of his reasoning (in polemi
c
contexts). Strategic considerations can pertain to the purpose o
f
reasonableness, to the purposes of effectiveness, or to the aim of findin
g
a balance between them (strategic manoeuvring).
