PhD Studentship

Fully funded 3 year Ph.D. studentship under the supervision of Dr.
Raphael Clifford.

Closing date: 8 February 2008.

Location: Algorithms Group, Department of Computer Science, Bristol University.

The newly formed Algorithms Group is located within the Department of
Computer Science which has an outstanding international reputation for
research and teaching; it was rated 5A at the last RAE and currently
occupies 3rd place in The Times league table of departments within the
UK.

The studentship is funded by an EPSRC funded project, "Pattern Matching
Algorithms for Massive Datasets". A summary of the project description
can be found at http://www.cs.bris.ac.uk/~clifford/summary.txt.

You should have (or be about to obtain) a first class Undergraduate degree or
distinction at Masters level in Computer Science, Mathematics, or related
discipline, and have a proven interest in algorithms and discrete
mathematics. Programming skills would be advantageous but are not necessary.

For EU nationals, all fees are paid with a further stipend of just
over 12,600 UK pounds.

For non-EU nationals, you will need to win an ORS (overseas research
scholarship http://www.bristol.ac.uk/studentfunding/overseas_pg/ors.html)
in order to gain full funding. This is highly competitive and you are
likely to
need at least one relevant publication to be successful.

For any further details please contact Dr. Clifford directly with your
full CV including transcripts of courses taken. You should include a
research statement (indicating what you see are interesting research
issues relating to the project and what relevant experience you have)
with any application. Formal Ph.D. application procedures can be
found at http://www.cs.bris.ac.uk/admissions/pg/apply.html.
Shortlisted candidates will be contacted within 10 days of the closing
deadline.
