RESEARCH POSITIONS (AIO/postdoc) IN PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE
(vacancy number: 1100.2001301)
There are two vacancies for research positions in the Faculty of
Philosophy,
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Depending on the
availability
of suitable candidates, either two AIO's (research trainees), or one
postdoc
and one AIO, will be appointed. Their research projects will be part of
the
research programme Understanding Scientific Understanding of dr. H.W. de
Regt.
This programme was awarded a grant for innovative research
(Vernieuwingsimpuls) by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific
Research
(NWO). Its aim is to develop a philosophical account of the nature of
scientific understanding. The AIO/postdoc projects contribute to this
aim by
means of case studies in specific scientific disciplines or fields,
preferably
in the life sciences and the social sciences. The full project

possible
research themes and contains details about application and selection
procedures. The final goal of the projects is to write a doctoral
dissertation
(AIO) and/or other publications (postdoc). The researchers will
participate in
the research programme Knowledge, Normativity and Practice of the
Faculty of
Philosophy, and, if applicable, in the Ph.D. education programme of the
Dutch
Graduate School Science, Technology and Modern Culture (WTMC).
REQUIREMENTS
Research trainee (AIO) candidates are required to have either a Master's
degree in a relevant science and sufficient knowledge of philosophy
(e.g. an
additional degree or a minor), or a Master's degree in philosophy and
sufficient schooling in a relevant science (e.g. an undergraduate or
minor).
Candidates for a postdoc position preferably have a Master's degree in a
relevant science and a Ph.D. degree in philosophy, or a Ph.D. degree in
a
relevant science and a Master's degree in philosophy.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Research trainee (AIO): four year fulltime (or five years on a 0.8 fte
basis).
Gross salary: NLG 3159 per month in the first year , increasing to NLG
4511
in the fourth year (on a fulltime basis).
Postdoc: two year fulltime (part-time also possible). Gross salary
between NLG
4496 (salary scale 10) and NLG 8313 (salary scale 11) per month (on a
fulltime
basis), depending on education and working experience.
