CfA: Two fully funded PhD Positions in Informatics: Algorithms/ Logic and AI, Bergen (Norway), Deadline:

Exciting opportunities for two PhD Research Fellows in Algorithms, Logic, and AI at the Department of Informatics at the University of Bergen. The positions are for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4 th year extension for teaching. The positions are subject to financing by the TMS-grant Trustworthy AI and by the University of Bergen. The successful candidate must be able to start in the position no later than September 30th, 2024.

Algorithmic Foundations of Trustworthy AI project aims to build a new theoretical framework for understanding, developing, and designing socially responsible algorithms incorporating human values into AI systems.

The growing ubiquity of algorithms raises serious concerns about their fairness, bias, and accountability. How can algorithmic injustice and inequity occur, and how can it be detected? How can we ensure that algorithms are not discriminating? Can we design algorithms that will eliminate, or at least reduce, the bias of the human user? How democratic are algorithmic decisions, and how easily can they be manipulated? The project aims to address such questions by limiting the algorithm’s perceived unfairness through adding new constraints (or decision rules) to the mathematical model, developing a modelling framework that combines formal models of social phenomena with formal models of computation.

The project comprises seeks to address two research questions: (1) How to develop algorithms with guaranteed performance (such as scalability, running time, approximation, or space complexity) for the needs of constraining algorithmic optimization? (2) How to design models with the right balance between algorithmic bias and algorithmic effectiveness?

Applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent education in Computer Science or Mathematics. Master students can apply provided they complete their final master exam before 25.06.2024. It is a condition of employment that the master's degree has been awarded.

- Research experience documented by publications in the top venues in Theoretical Computer Science (like FOCS/STOC/SODA/ICALP/LICS) or AI (like AAAI/IJCAI) conferences is a strong advantage.
- Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
- Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.
- Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates
