Kenneth Kunen (1943-2020)

Kenneth Kunen, emeritus professor of mathematics at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison passed away peacefully in the night from 14 to 15 August
2020.

Kunen was well-known for "Kunen's Inconsistency", the theorem that ZFC +
"there is a non-trivial elementary embedding from the universe to itself"
is inconsistent. Many set theorists learned the theory of forcing from
Kunen's excellent textbook "Set Theory". With Jerry E. Vaughan, he was one
of the editors of the "Handbook of Set-Theoretic Topology" (Elsevier).

Kunen obtained his Ph.D. degree at Stanford University in 1968 under
supervision of Dana Scott with a thesis entitled "Inaccessibility
Properties of Cardinals".
